Today's moviegoers are mostly unaware of the tremendous excitement and appeal that movies generated in the "Silent" era. Of course the films were anything except silent, with a live orchestra as a backdrop, audiences expressed themselves with applause, catcalls, caustic commentary and bawdy humor. The Movies were almost a variety of opera, a live performance.
