The Rules to Creating Live Soundtracks
(continually under construction)
1. Do not overwrite, leave enough SLACK, so if you get the tempo wrong, you have enough space to remedy it.
2. Find visually iconic monemts in the film ("landmarks") and pair these moments with equally iconic events in the score, helping your navigation
3. Don't be afraid of improvisation, it's a good way to create variety
4. Write for your players strengths
5. Whenever possible, have solo pickups cue tempos and ensemble entrances
6. "Chase" has priority, whatever else is happening should stop.
7. Tempo has priority, unless you are making a statement.
8. Use quotes
9 Sometimes silent films portray simultaneous events by rapidly shifting montages back and forth. Try to find music that can accomodate both
10. Don't be afraid of repeating a recognizable melody, leitmotive, rhythm, especially if there is evolution. Your audience will get a hit of seratonin when they recognize it.
11. Encourage players to internalize the tempos, making awkward conduction unnecessary.
12. Choose a musician (often a percussionist) to fill in the SLACK if we are ahead in the film
